Target 14.1

Understanding the Condition of Marine Pollution

Summary Marine pollution is becoming more severe and causes problems such as ecosystem destruction. There are several factors, mainly marine litter, such as plastic litter. Even though plastic litter has been decomposed naturally for a long time, it remains in the sea as microplastic, causing environmental issues. Plastic pollution is one of the most severe problems in the world. Plastic waste increases as the population and economy grow. Japan is one of the countries with the most plastic litter in the world. In the past, the Japanese have experienced diseases caused by marine pollution, like Minamata disease. We should avoid repeating the same mistakes. Many countries worldwide, including Japan, are coping with marine pollution, but there are many challenges to improving this problem. For example, most people are not concerned about marine pollution and do not have much knowledge about marine pollution. We used to think that way, but we understand the current seriousness of marine pollution thanks to the volunteer activities of two organizations, Horikawa Machi Net and Kamenokotai. The activities concerned about marine pollution will help people raise environmental awareness, so we want many people to participate in these activities to understand the condition of marine pollution. As more people become aware, we will achieve the targets of SDG 14, Life Below Water.
