SDG 5, Target 5.4

Who does the housework?

Summary Who does the housework in your house? There is a prejudice among us that women do housework, which made us focus on SDG 5.4. The gap between men and women in housework and childcare is quite significant in Japan. However, if we understand that fact and take action,we have found that we can help women who do their best in housework. Our objectives are to understand the domestic and global gender gap, take action by volunteering, and share information. In Colombia, there is a tradition that women should do care work. These women lose the opportunity to receive an education and have low-income because of this tradition.
Therefore, the situation improved by changing the town to be more child-rearing friendly. There is also prejudice in Japan that childcare and housework are for women because of the Japanese traditional system. Moreover, Japanese men contribute considerably less to housework and childcare. Therefore, we joined two volunteer activities to help women engaged in childcare and housework. First, we went to Sasashima Support Center and cared for the children. We learned how childcare and housework are hard by volunteering. Second, we went to E-Able Nagoya and thought about unconscious bias. This opportunity allowed us to learn about many familiar unconscious biases. The gap between men and women in housework and childcare is quite large in Japan. However, if we understand this issue and take action, we can help women who do their best in housework and have careers.
