Research Project

  • Role of interleukins in immune and inflammatory reactions
  • Host defense mechanism against Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Etiological role of cigarette smoking in rheumatoid arthritis
  • Immune evasion mechanisms by microorganisms

Exogenous and endogenous stressors, such as microorganisms, environmental chemicals, UV and injury, induce a wide variety of host defense responses, in which cytokines play important roles. Aberrant induction of inflammatory cytokines induces acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. Our studies focused on the effector and regulatory mechanisms of inflammatory cytokines in immune and inflammatory reactions, including host response against M. tuberculosis, immune disruption and evasion mechanisms by environmental chemicals and microorganisms, respectively.

Appropriate production of IL-1 induces beneficial effects, however aberrant production induces deleterious effects. Elucidating the mechanisms of IL-1 production and its effects leads to the therapy against IL-1 related inflammatory diseases.
